Benton Franklin Humane Society
About Our Shelter
"Speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves"
The Benton-Franklin Humane Society is located in the City of Kennewick in the Tri-Cities area of Southeastern Washington State. Our Shelter & Adoption Center is a private, nonprofit organization that is supported solely by charitable contributions, and dedicated to preventing cruelty to animals and the creation of a more responsible and humane community.
Although we do provide Humane Education services for our surrounding cities, we are not Government-funded.
The Benton-Franklin Humane Society is managed by a volunteer Board of Trustees. The members of the Board bring to the Humane Society many diverse backgrounds with business as well as animal expertise.
The Benton-Franklin Humane Society is a five-time recipient of the prestigious American Humane Association "Standard of Excellence" award. Only 72 out of more than 4,000 shelters across the nation received this award. Our staff training programs were instrumental in providing the knowledge, expertise and professionalism necessary to achieve such an honor.
As you will see at our facilities and on our website, we are a busy and necessary organization and we hope you will choose to support our efforts by getting involved.
NOTE: The Benton-Franklin Humane Society is not associated with Tri-City Animal Control (TCAC). TCAC is contracted to local municipalities for purposes of control of stray, dangerous or diseased animals. BFHS held the animal control contract until 1998, when it decided to become a no-kill shelter. BFHS is no longer an animal control organization, nor are we allowed to accept stray animals from areas under contract with TCAC.
NOTE 2: The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not an umbrella organization, nor do they control the use of the term "humane society" to describe organizations such as BFHS. BFHS has no relationship whatsoever with HSUS, nor do we subscribe to any HSUS policy in particular. HSUS may solicit funds from anyone and may also claim to support local animal welfare efforts. This latter claim is only true insofar as HSUS makes certain resource material available to animal welfare organizations for a fee. BFHS receives no funding from HSUS, nor do BFHS funds or donations support HSUS.

Our Mission. The Benton-Franklin Humane Society, founded in 1966, is a private, nonprofit organization supported solely by contributions, dedicated to preventing cruelty to animals and the creation of a more responsible and humane community. We provide adoption services for abandoned, abused, and unwanted animals and promote the education of children and adults concerning the treatment and care of all animals.
