Good Morning:

The Benton-Franklin Humane Society would like to announce that the purchase of land for our new, larger "no-kill" animal shelter was finalized late Friday afternoon.

The BFHS now is the owners of 3.66 acres of land located on the eastern edge of Kennewick (1710 E. 7th Ave.). Our architect, Terry Thornhill, has begun work on the detailed blueprints of the project and the hope is to begin construction sometime early this summer.

However, we are still about $500,000 short of our goal for the project. So the BFHS will be launching a "final push" campaign soon to see if we can raise the remainder of the money needed to fund the project without having to take out a loan from the bank and begin our life in our new facility in debt. This campaign will feature a colorful pamphlet that will be distributed to area businesses in the hopes that they become sponsors of the project.

We also are in the midst of planning a "ceremonial" ground-breaking, which will take place in mid-April. As soon as the date is finalized, we will announce it.

"We have cleared a very important hurdle in this project.  The project was in a holding pattern until we had the land secured, but now that we have that we can start building our dream shelter.  We all know that the growing population of the Mid-Columbia has translated into an increase in the unwanted animal problem in our area. Although our shelter will not solve all of our problems, we know that it will be a big step in helping to not only give shelter to more animals, but to help educate the public on how to become a more humane community."
