Good Afternoon:
The Benton-Franklin Humane Society would like to issue the following statement on the rescue yesterday morning of the 371 American Eskimo dogs from a Benton County kennel.
The BFHS contacted the Benton County Sheriffs Department a couple of weeks ago when the story came out about the arrest and charges against the owner of the Sun Valley Kennel with an offer to help. Since the authorities were looking for a place to temporarily house the dogs for the duration of the legal proceedings, we were unable to offer assistance. But, we did let them know that we were available in the future.
The Benton-Franklin Humane Society was NOT a part of the rescue Wednesday. The Humane Society of the United States, along with other regional organizations, was a part of the rescue team, but the BFHS is NOT associated with the HSUS. In fact, those organizations are better equipped and experienced with this kind of rescue operation. We have received dozens of calls and emails from across the state from people wanting to see, adopt or help with the dogs. We are referring all contacts in this situation to the Benton Co. Sheriffs Office.
When or if the opportunity arises in which the BFHS can help the rescue effort, we will gladly step in. Until that time, we will follow the legal proceedings like everyone else and see how this matter unfolds. As always, our main concern is the health and well-being of the innocent victims in this case, and we hope that each and every one of their stories will have a happy ending.
The BFHS is the area's only "no-kill" animal shelter and has been a member of the Mid-Columbia's community for over 40 years. The shelter is located at 8620 W. Gage Blvd. in Kennewick and operates Monday-Friday 12pm-5pm and Saturday 10am-6pm. Information on the BFHS can also be found at our website www.bfhs.com.
