6/18/09 Puppy Mill Update from BFHS
In an effort to keep the public informed of the American Eskimo dogs seized May 27th from a Benton County kennel, the Benton-Franklin Humane Society releases the following:
It has been about three weeks since a total of 20 American Eskimos (ten adult and ten puppies) were surrendered to the BFHS. We are happy to report that the momma dog and her pups are doing fine in their foster home, but are still about five weeks away from being old enough to get their first set of shots and microchip and being available for adoption.
Some of the remaining adult dogs have been placed in a foster home and some are being housed at the BFHS shelter, and all are making some progress on their social issues. Two of the adult males have made enough progress with our staff that they will be put out for public viewing today (6/17) when we open for business. This means we will also be able to start taking adoption applications on those two dogs.
"Simba" is about five years old and has been neutered, while "Kenai" is 1-1/2 - 2 years old and will be neutered Friday and available to go on a trial period with an approved applicant Saturday. Normally, the policy of the BFHS is for adult (over one year of age) animals to go on a three-day trial period in the home of the approved family to see if he or she will be a good fit. We are extending that trial period out for the American Eskimo dogs to at least a week, for obvious reasons.
We can't stress enough that although we feel these two dogs are "adoptable" right now, they are not perfect and will need continued socialization and/or training after the adoption and possibly their whole lives. The staff and foster families will continue to work with the other dogs to get them more adoptable, including easing their fears and getting them used to human contact, so that they will be able to be placed in a loving home.
Again, we want to thank Dr. Coleman and his staff for their help with all of the health issues with these rescued dogs, as well as the staff, volunteers and foster homes and the support from the public. The BFHS is proud to have the opportunity to be a part of a happy ending for these 20 dogs that are finally getting the love and attention that every animal deserves.
