"Gertie's Story"
In an effort to keep the public informed of the American Eskimo dogs seized May 27th from a Benton County kennel, the Benton-Franklin Humane Society releases the following:
When the Benton-Franklin Humane Society decided to take in some of the rescued American Eskimo dogs, it was an easy choice. The BFHS wanted to play a big part in helping these dogs to have a happy ending to their story. This included taking on dogs that had social issues to work out, as well as health issues.
"Gertie" is a 10-year-old spayed female who has come a long way in her social development, in an effort to make her more adoptable. It was recently discovered that she has cancerous growths on her torso. After long consideration by the BFHS staff and the staff at Coleman Veterinary Clinic, we have opted for surgery to remove the tumors. The surgery is not cheap (approximately $2,000). But, we feel it's the best option to alleviate her immediate pain and set her up for healthy and happy remainder of her life.
Once the surgery is completed, Gertie will need about two weeks of recovery time. After that, we would like to send her to her forever home and her "happy ending". At the present time, we do not have any adoption applications on her, and it will take a special person to welcome Gertie into their family. But we know that person is out there. And hopefully, by getting Gertie's story out there, we will be able to speed the process up ... for her sake.
For more information about donating to "Gertie's Fund" or to adopt Gertie, contact the BFHS at 374-4235 or operations@bfhs.com. Adoption applications can be filled out at the shelter or online at www.bfhs.com.
The BFHS is the area's only "no-kill" animal shelter and has been a member of the Mid-Columbia community for over 40 years. The shelter is located at 8620 W. Gage Blvd. in Kennewick and operates Monday-Friday 12pm-5pm and Saturday 10am-6pm. Information on the BFHS can also be found at our website www.bfhs.com.
