Update on "Gertie's Story"
In an effort to keep the public informed of the American Eskimo dogs seized May 27th from a Benton County kennel, the Benton-Franklin Humane Society releases the following:
As a result of media coverage last night [7/14/09] and this morning of "Gertie's story", her surgery to remove the tumors in her torso will be paid for.
I got a call this morning from Benton Co. Sheriff Larry Taylor who said to send him the bill. His office received a lot of donations from local people to go to the care of the rescued American Eskimos. After seeing this story, Sheriff Taylor cleared it with the county auditor and treasurer to pick up the tab for this situation.
The remainder of the money donated to the county will be sent to the Humane Society of the United States, who spent a very large sum of money on this rescue (I only have second-hand knowledge of estimates, but the Sheriffs Office might have a more exact figure).
Unfortunately, Sheriff Taylor contacted me just before he was heading out of town...so he will not be available for a comment. But, I know he was very happy to help us out with this expense. I am available after 1pm today (7/15), if anyone would like a comment.
The bottom line is...this very generous community (including the Sheriff's Office) has once again stepped up to help these rescued dogs. The BFHS will now schedule Gertie's surgery with Coleman Veterinary Clinic as soon as we can. Once she has recovered, we will work diligently to find her a great home so she can spend the remainder of her life in a loving environment and have a happy ending to her story.
LATE FLASH!!!
Shortly after posting the above news release the following additional situation developed: Gertie just went out on a trial period in a near-ideal home. It's an older couple (he is retired, she works at home), they have other dogs, don't leave their animals alone much and already have a relationship with Coleman's. In fact, the vet office staff is apparently very excited this is happening.
The BFHS is the area's only "no-kill" animal shelter and has been a member of the Mid-Columbia community for over 40 years. The shelter is located at 8620 W. Gage Blvd. in Kennewick and operates Monday-Friday 12pm-5pm and Saturday 10am-6pm. Information on the BFHS can also be found at our website www.bfhs.com.
